Luke Carberry Mogan

Journalist, Editor, Multimedia Storyteller

As a writer seeking to tell the stories our communities have to offer, I approach all topics with an open-mind to ensure all voices are heard.

My diverse background in professional and lived experiences offers a unique perspective and a portfolio covering a wide range of topics. This includes reporting on Congressional committee hearings, workers' union strikes,

college sexual assault, water contamination, and responses to COVID-19.

I am both deadline and curiosity driven, wanting to know more about a subject while working out of stressful environments, such as the United States Capitol or various protest marches.

Multi-faceted, my career in Communications has led me down all kinds of paths and opportunities. From pitching non-profit campaign strategies to tabulating voter data for the 2020 Election, I continuously strive to adapt to match the styles and skillsets various projects demand of me.

Currently, you can find me contributing stories to my journalism blog, searching for inspiration in my digital and physical medium art, and volunteering with my local food pantry to help manage their social media and create graphics, press materials for them.

Associated Press (AP) Elections, Vote Entry Operator - Outcall Team

Middletown, NJ November 2020 - PRESENT

Worked tirelessly the entire 2020 Election Week as a contractor receiving and inputting voter data into the AP's VoteTracker system. It was my duty as a member of the outcall team to phone ahead to stringers and clerks receiving electoral counts, establish a timeline for when their precinct is expected to announce them, and ensure there is a line of communication for our vote entry operators to receive this data on schedule.

Days following Election Night were concentrated towards web-scraping county websites to cross-reference results with numbers posted on state databases. I am especially proud to have contributed in the effort to confirm Pennsylvania mail-in ballot numbers, outcalling to county clerks for estimates on the amount of provisional and absentee ballots left to count. Consistent contact with my team was maintained through Slack, where flagged voter data was reported, while also utilizing Amazon WorkSpaces and Connect, Google Sheets, and Microsoft Authenticator, for secure and accurate data collection.

The Army Times, Editorial Intern
Springfield, VA | 2016

My first newsroom experience, I was quick to pick up on the military terminology the publication's senior reporters were keen to. I developed regular sources and interpersonal relationships with Army Public Affairs officers through our daily correspondences. The more Army stories I drafted and military personnel I interviewed, the more I learned about the culture behind what drives our service members. The summer spent with the Army Times pushed me out of my comfort zone as a journalist, as I learned to work out of stressful environments, such as Capitol Hill and the Pentagon, when covering committee hearings and briefings.

Wrote stories as a contributing writer for various staff advised or student-edited blogs, papers, and news sites. The main focus was researching and reporting topics developing on-campus or in the surrounding Poughkeepsie/Hudson Valley area. Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Marist College Chapter Director of Finance

Poughkeepsie, NY April 2015 - April 2016

One of my first leadership positions had me overseeing the financial record-keeping for Marist PRSSA's club accounts with the university's College Activities department and the School of Communications. A young-professional organization, we were constantly trying to attract and retain new membership. I was tasked with updating the club's active member roster, and collecting dues for the governing organization, PRSA National. A great amount of detail went into preparing allocations for the club's funds each semester, working closely with the event planning committee, Chapter President, Director of Chapter Programming, and Sodexo catering for every general meeting, workshop, and speaker series.
